This album happened by accident. It all started in summer 2018 with a call to action by the american curator and musician Jack Hertz, who asked musicians from around the world for a tribute to Krell music. You remember? Krell was the intelligent species in the movie “Forbidden Planet”, far more intelligent as mankind. Their typical kind of music was composed by Louis and Bebe Barron. Of course none of the musicians used the original soundtrack neither as a sample nor as a new interpretation of the old score. By the way - you’ll find the music of this project on Jack’s Label Aural Films. It includes my song THE KRELLIFICATION OF BIELEFELD (RADIO EDIT). For this song I tried a new technique of composing starting to create musical sketches as a collection of ideas. When the song was ready, I used three of these miniatures and a lot were left behind. So I decided to develop these to full songs. Working like this was a learning process for me. Was it the influence of the Plastic Educator from the movie? I started to look for the meaning of Krell and found also a company manufacturing high end stereo equipment. Fantastic - that fits pefect to the world of music. And there is a German Painter having the same name. Some of his paintings use famous car design and one section is even called “art is criminal”. That’s how I was inspired to copy the idea of an art shredder like Banksy did it - and transform the photo into a comic mode.

Dieses Album ist aus Zufall entstanden Alles begann im Sommer 2018 mit einem Aufruf des amerikanischen Künstlers und Labelkurators Jack Hertz, der Musiker auf der ganzen Welt dazu einlud, eine Hommage an die Musik der Krell einzuspielen. Ihr erinnert Euch? Krell - das war die intelligente Spezies aus dem Film “Der verbotene Planet”, den Menschen weit überlegen. Ihre typische Musik war das Werk von Louis und Bebe Barron. Natürlich hat keiner der Musiker diese Klänge gesamplet oder die Originalpartitur neu eingespielt. Nebenher erwähnt: Ihr findet all diese Musik auf Jack’s Label “Aural Films”, und das Album enthält meinen Titel “THE KRELLIFICATION OF BIELEFELD (RADIO EDIT).

Für dieses Lied habe ich einen neuen Kompositionsstil ausprobiert, indem ich eine Vielzahl von musikalischen Skizzen als Ideenplattform erstellt habe. Drei davon habe ich für das Lied genutzt, der Rest lag brach auf mekinem iPad. Aber diese Arbeit war für mich ein spannender Lernprozess. War das womöglich der Einfluss des “Plastic Educators” aus dem Film? Ich schaute im Internet nach weiteren bedeutungen für “Krell” und fand eine Firma, die High-End-Stereoequipment herstellt. Das passt doch perfect in die Welt der Musik. Und dann ist da ein deutscher Maler dieses Namens. Einige seiner Bilder greifen das Design berühmter Automobile auf. Und eine Sektion seiner Arbeiten nennt er “Die Kunst ist kriminell”. Das war die Inspiration, Banksys Kunst-Schredder zu kopieren und zugleich das Foto mit einem Comic-Modus zu verfremden.

I don’t think there’s anything more captivating than when synths and strings fuse together into one exceptional piece of music (except maybe a sparse trumpet echoing in the background occasionally playing a few notes, but then that would be my bliss).
